The inaugural Festival of Stories launches this October 16 -18 in Echuca Moama.
Over three days, 30 curated events will showcase storytellers from all over Australia.
Professional artists spanning music, stage, screen, creative arts, and the written word will share the stage with cultural leaders, journalists, farmers, chefs and country characters to show us the many ways to tell a great story.
There will be something for everyone at the inaugural Festival of Stories. You will be inspired, moved, connected and thoroughly entertained through the art of storytelling.
Local and visiting musicians, authors, comedians, creatives, cultural leaders and community will gather for a unique event that aims to create a platform for shared stories and experiences on the banks of the Murray (Dhungala River).
From the decks of our famous paddlesteamers, to our Port of Echuca historic wharf and heritage buildings, at award-winning hospitality venues and our stunning Campaspe Regional Library, storytelling of all persuasions will take centre stage.
Join ARIA-award winning musician Dan Sultan, alongside local Yorta Yorta singer-songwriters Benny Walker and Madi Colville-Walker as they share songs that inspire and shape a sense of place.
Celebrated authors Jock Serong, Mark Brandi, Kemi Nevkapil, Meg Bignell, Jade Miles and moderator Jaclyn Crupi will all share their stories, along with comedian and ABC broadcaster Sammy J, Logie-award winning filmmaker and local, Joanna Werner and Yorta Yorta Elder and academic Dr Wayne Atkinson.
Festival of Stories Chair Christy O’Brien says the festival was developed as a way of connecting individuals through stories: to each other, to place, to culture and to community.
“This is a festival like no other with headline Australian artists featured alongside local creatives in storytelling events, workshops and experiences including a creative writing workshop, journalism forum, poetry breakfast, cultural weaving, nature walks and many other community-based storytelling experiences,” she says.
“Everyone has a story to tell, and through this festival we’re creating a platform to celebrate the ancient art of storytelling in a modern world – through music, books, film, art, cultural experiences, food and stories of the land.
“We invite everyone to join us at our first ever Festival of Stories and be part of the story.”
